Златоустовская гравюра на стали родилась, как искусство украшения холодного оружия. В начале XIX века в уральском городе Златоусте было решено создать еще один центр по выпуску холодного оружия, т. к уже имевшиеся не могли полностью удовлетворить потребности армии в нем. Наряду со строевым оружием в Златоусте стали выпускать украшенное оружие. Для этого фабрике нужны были специалисты - оружейники высокого класса. Царское правительство приглашает для работы мастеров из Золингена и Клингенталя - известных оружейных центров Германии того времени.
До 1817 года единственными мастерами по украшению клинков были иностранные мастера Шафы - отец Вильгельм - Николаус и сын Людвиг.
С 1818 года начинается второй, "русский", период украшенного оружия. Иван и Ефим Бушуевы, Петр, Максим и Федор Тележниковы, Иван Бояршинов, Федор Стрижев, Архип Лепешков и другие мастера подняли искусство украшения оружия на такую высоту, на какую больше не взлетала златоустовская гравюра на стали с середины XIX века и до наших дней. В течение 20-30-ых годов XIX века производство испытывало трудности, однако во второй половине XIX века снова стало наращивать мощности: выпускалось уже не только оружие, но и предметы обихода. Сюжеты стали разнообразнее, не только орнаменты, но и реалистические изображения.
В последнее десятилетие XIX века и в начале ХХ века в Златоусте выпускалось большое количество украшенных бытовых изделий - портсигаров, спичечниц, подносов, браслетов, тростей, столовых приборов. XX век был неоднозначным в развитии гравюры на стали: политические события 20-ых годов, Великая Отечественная война - все эти факторы влияли на качество и количество выпускаемой продукции. Улучшение технологических приемов шло параллельно с государственным заказом.
